Save a Fish, Kill a Farmer

ftshfarmer

The farmers in California produce a lot of food that feeds America. But they’re not producing any now. The federal government has cut off their water under the endangered species act to save the delta smelt, a two-inch long minnow.

The governor has set up a food bank that feeds 30,000 people. Ones who want to work, ones who had jobs, ones who paid taxes. Some farmers have, I’m told, lost their land and ended up in bankruptcy because there is no water to nourish the land to produce the crops which provides the food the rest of us eat.

The Interior Secretary and many others are aware of this situation. They’ve chosen to protect the fish and not the farmers.

The most fertile land in the country, rather than being a food supplier, is reduced to standing in line at a food bank to get food crated and shipped in from China.

What is wrong with this picture?

The president can fix this with a stroke of his pen. Something he’s repeatedly been asked to do–by the governor, now by 53 mayors in the area, by countless citizens directly impacted. So far, he’s refused.

Today, please add your voice to mine in writing your representatives and the White House. Today, let’s examine our priorities. Let’s decide whether to save a fish or save our farmers–and protect our food supply.

I can’t and won’t speak for you. But I do speak for me.

Mr. President, you have a moral obligation to protect this country and those in it. Turn on the water.

Blessings,

Vicki
